An Interior Ministry official from the Spanish government, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Friday the bag turned up in a van that had been stolen and abandoned near the station where three of the four trains departed from before they were bombed.
Inside the bag was the same kind of detonators used in the attacks that killed 191 people.
The van was found in Alcala de Henares, about 20 miles northeast of Madrid. Police said they also discovered an Arabic-language cassette tape with verses from the Koran in the vehicle.
